for use in Cycle 4 academic audits by the
New Zealand Universities
Academic Audit Unit

This manual replaces the Unit's earlier Academic audit manual December 2002 edition. This revision updates the Unit's operational practices and requirements, and introduces in particular:
- an indicative framework for institutional portfolios,
- the stronger interest by audit panels in the relationship of processes to the achievement of desired outputs and outcomes,
- the inclusion of affirmations as well as commendations and recommendations in audit reports.

Overview
The manual is divided into five chapters, each with a particular purpose.
| Chapter one |
Introduces the New Zealand Universities Academic Audit Unit, the principles for institutional quality systems and academic audit, and the scope of Cycle 4 academic audits.
|
Chapter two |
provides an overview of the audit process, from institutional self-assessment through to the integration of the audit report recommendations into a university’s own programme of quality improvement.
|
Chapter three |
focuses on the responsibilities of the university, with particular emphasis on:
- the framework and analysis expected of the self-assessment portfolio,
- the university’s role in the Planning and Site Visits.

Chapter four |
comes from the auditors' perspective, providing particular details with respect to the personal attributes and expectations of auditors' conduct and contributions.
|
Chapter five |
details the responsibilities of the Unit, including:
- the general role of responsibility for the quality of the whole audit process,
- specifics about the management of meetings,
- the process involved in the writing of the audit Report,
- the approach to maintain in the content of the report.
